Beyond Marble: New Surface Options
We have already compared microcement, marble, and wood. But there are other surface materials in the furniture market. Here is how microcement compares to ceramic and glass — two materials increasingly used in contemporary table design.
Microcement
Our nine-layer system over MDF: seamless, waterproof, repairable, available in 6 colours. Lighter than stone, warmer than glass. No visible joints between top and edges.
Ceramic / Sintered Stone
Ceramic tabletops (including sintered stone brands like Dekton and Neolith) are made from compressed and fired mineral powders. They are extremely hard, heat-resistant, and available in large-format slabs.
- Durability: Excellent — highly scratch and heat resistant
- Weight: Heavy — requires strong structural support
- Joints: Visible seams if the tabletop requires multiple ceramic slabs
- Repairability: Very difficult to repair chips or cracks
- Edge finish: Ceramic edges are typically sharp or slightly bevelled — cannot achieve the rounded, seamless edges possible with microcement
- Cost: Typically more expensive than microcement
Glass
We offer glass-microcement combination tables like the Carmene and Mattia. Glass as a primary surface has distinct characteristics:
- Durability: Scratch-resistant but can chip on edges
- Weight: Moderate
- Maintenance: Shows fingerprints and needs frequent cleaning
- Transparency: Creates a sense of lightness and space — ideal for small rooms
- Temperature: Cold to the touch
Where Microcement Wins
Microcement offers a unique combination that neither ceramic nor glass can match:
- Seamless edges: The surface flows continuously from top to edge — no separate edge band, no visible joint
- Warmth: The mineral surface is warm to the touch, unlike glass or ceramic
- Custom shapes: Microcement can be applied to any MDF form — organic curves, asymmetrical shapes, and custom edge profiles are all possible
- Repairability: Unlike ceramic or glass, microcement can be locally refinished
- Weight: Significantly lighter than ceramic
