Our Approach to Sustainability
Marlot Baus tables are built with a specific material philosophy: sustainable core materials, durable surface systems, and made-to-order production that eliminates waste.
Sustainable MDF Core
The core of every table is low-density MDF (medium-density fibreboard). MDF is an engineered wood product made from wood fibres that are a byproduct of other wood processing — meaning no trees are harvested specifically for MDF production.
Benefits of MDF over solid wood or particle board:
- Stability: Does not warp, crack, or expand with humidity changes — the table will remain structurally sound for decades
- Uniformity: No weak spots, knots, or grain irregularities
- Resource efficiency: Uses wood fibres that would otherwise be waste
- Low formaldehyde: Our MDF meets E1 emission standards
Made to Order, Not Mass Produced
We do not hold stock. We do not produce seasonal collections. Every table is built only when ordered. This means:
- Zero deadstock: No unsold inventory that ends up in landfill
- Zero overproduction: We manufacture exactly what is needed
- Custom dimensions: Tables are built to fit the customer's space precisely — no standard sizes that might not work
Durable by Design
The most sustainable furniture is furniture that lasts. Our nine-layer microcement surface system is engineered for decades of daily use:
- Waterproof: The sealer system prevents water damage — the most common cause of furniture degradation
- Repairable: Unlike laminate or lacquered surfaces, microcement can be locally refinished by a specialist
- 3-year warranty: We stand behind our construction quality
Solid Wood Legs
Our structural legs are made from solid spruce wood — a fast-growing, renewable softwood. The visible finishes (Natural Oak, Dark Oak, Cherry, Walnut) are applied as surface treatments over the spruce structure.
Local Production
Every table is made in our workshop in Sabadell, Barcelona. Local production means:
- Short supply chains
- Direct oversight of material sourcing
- Reduced transportation emissions within the EU market
