A Surface System, Not Just a Material
Microcement furniture is often described by its finish alone — the smooth, continuous surface that resembles polished concrete but is warmer and softer to the touch. What sets Marlot Baus apart is that the microcement surface is not a single coating but a nine-layer system engineered for durability and water resistance.
The nine layers
- Primer: Bonds the microcement to the MDF core.
- Base microcement: Creates the primary surface texture and colour.
- Fine-finish microcement (×3 layers): Builds depth, smoothness, and consistency in the colour.
- Waterproof sealer (×4 coats): Reinforced with a flexible mesh, this transparent layer protects against water, stains, and daily wear.
Microcement vs. Marble
Marble is a natural stone — heavy, porous, and prone to staining from wine, oil, and acid. It requires periodic sealing and can etch on contact with acidic substances. Microcement, when properly sealed, offers a comparable visual warmth without the porosity. The waterproof sealer system means that coffee, olive oil, and tomato sauce can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
Microcement is also significantly lighter than marble, which allows for larger table tops and more varied leg designs without the structural constraints of stone.
Microcement vs. Laminate
Laminate is a thin decorative layer applied to engineered wood. It is affordable but limited in texture, cannot be repaired if scratched, and has visible seams at the edges. Microcement is a continuous surface — there are no seams, no joints, and no visible transitions between the top and edges of the table. Scratches can be locally refinished by a specialist.
The tactile difference is the most immediately noticeable: laminate feels flat and synthetic, while microcement has the mineral warmth of hand-finished plaster.
The Core: Low-Density MDF
We use sustainable low-density MDF as the core material. This is not particle board — MDF is an engineered wood fibre panel that provides a stable, uniform substrate for the microcement system. It does not expand and contract with humidity changes the way solid wood does, which prevents the surface from cracking over time.
Built to Order, Built to Last
Every table is made to specifications in our workshop in La Llagosta, Barcelona. There is no mass production line. Each surface is hand-finished, and the nine-layer system is applied in sequence with curing time between layers. The result is a piece of furniture designed to be used daily and to last for years, backed by a 3-year structural warranty.
